Who we are
Mellor and Jackson is a practice of solicitors in Oldham, Lancashire. We have offices in the centre of Oldham, and also in nearby Royton. From these bases we provide comprehensive legal advice on all matters for the public, companies and other professional organisations.
Michael Cheetham, Senior Partner

Michael commenced employment in September 1962 as an Articled Clerk and qualified as a solicitor in January 1968. Following in the steps of his father, George Cheetham, who was senior partner at the time, Michael became a partner in 1970 and senior partner in 1988.

In all his years at Mellor & Jackson, criminal law has been Michael’s specialism, although he also has extensive experience in family law. As head of the criminal department, he has a wide experience in all aspects of criminal and Road Traffic law.

He also undertakes all prosecutions on behalf of the RSPCA in this area.

Michael has been a Duty Solicitor since the inception of the scheme and is also a member of the Regional Duty Solicitor Committee. He was a member of the Oldham Law Association for many years, having served 13 years as its Honorary Secretary and two annual terms as President.

The firm is franchised by the Legal Services Commission in criminal law.

John Edmondson,
John Edmondson qualified as a Solicitor on the 15th March 1975 and became a Partner in Mellor & Jackson in 1977. Over the years he has carried out a variety of legal work but now specialises in domestic and commercial property conveyancing. He was President of Oldham Law Association in 1996.

Rosalind Callander,

Rosalind is a partner in Mellor & Jackson having qualified at Chafes in cheshire in 1986.She joined Mellor & Jackson in 1987 and is now head of the firm's Wills and Probate department.

She continues to expand her corporate work as a director and group legal advisor to a holding company and its subsidiaries of an international aviation consultancy based in Manchester. Rosalind is also a member of an advisory board of a Primary Care Society advising GP's on medico/legal matters. Her interests include golf,gardening, food and walking her dog.

Keith Etherington, Solicitor

Keith joined the practice in 1987 after leaving school. He studied part time to qualify as a Fellow of the Institute of Legal Executives in 1996. Keith received a scholarship prize from his college for the best results in the Part One examinations.

On 16th September 2002 Keith was admitted by the Law Society as a solicitor after completing his studies at Manchester Metropolitan University. Whilst at M&J Keith has only ever undertaken civil litigation work and now specialises in personal injury and clinical negligence claims.

As a Senior Litigator, Association of Personal Injury Lawyers  he is dedicated to promoting the interests of accident victims and the improvement of services provided by the personal injury lawyer. Keith now heads the personal injury department.

Keith is also a lecturer of law and legal practice at the Oldham College.

In July 2003 Keith was elected to the Council of the Law Society representing newly qualified solicitors. In July 2005 he was appointed Law Society Council Member for the Young Solicitors Group and is the current Chairman of the national YSG.

He is also a member of the Law Society's Standards Board, the Equality & Diversity Committee and the LPC Board.

In September 2003 he completed stage 2 of the course to become a Solicitor-Advocate to gain rights of audience equivalent to a barrister. He aims to complete the final stage in the coming months.

Rosemary Wood, Solicitor

Rosemary began her legal studies with the College of Law in 1997, gaining the Common Professional Examination, the entry route for non-law graduates. She had previously obtained a Geography BA degree with the University of London. Rosemary followed this with the next stage of training, the Legal Practice Course, with the University of Wolverhampton. She then undertook the required two year Training Contract with Wilsons, based in Salisbury, with whom she qualified as a Solicitor in October 2002.

In January 2004, after working as part of the Commercial Property team at Wilsons, Rosemary moved to Solihull, Birmingham, to join the Private Client team at Standley & Co.

Rosemary relocated to Manchester in February 2005 to marry and joined Mellor & Jackson as an Assistant Solicitor as part of the Wills & Probate team based at the Royton office. She can assist you with a wide range of private client matters including probate and administration of estates, will drafting enduring powers of attorney and receivership applications.

Fred Hollingworth,

Fred commenced employment with M&J on 28th August 1961 as a legal clerk. He joined the Institute of Legal Executives when it was first created and qualified as a Fellow. He specialises in Family/Matrimonial Law having practised it for the last 40 years. He is currently dealing with more general law and non-legal aid Family work and is based at the Royton office. Interests include holidays and the Church of England having been a Churchwarden for the last 20 years.

Lynda Nield, Conveyancer
Lynda Nield is an experienced conveyancing assistant who has dealt with conveyancing of residential properties for a period in excess of 20 years. She joined the firm in 2003.

Sameena Akhtar, Trainee Legal Executive

Sameena Akhtar commenced employment at Mellor & Jackson in August 2000. Initially commencing work as secretary and assistant to the Head of the Personal Injury Department, dealing with RTA’s, slips and trips, accidents at work and CICA claims, before progressing to fee earner status.

She is currently studying towards completing her Legal Executive exams whereafter she intends to take the CPE and LPC to qualify as a solicitor. She has on two occasions received the highest marks for ILEX students at the Oldham Business Centre.

Sameena can speak Urdu, Punjabi, and Mirpuri.

Sameena is a Member of the Association of Personal Injury Lawyers and Member of the Association of Muslim Lawyers.
